Thai Yoga Massage
Thai yoga massage is an ancient, Eastern form of bodywork and can be traced back 2500 years to India and the spread of Buddhism. The founding father of Thai massage Jivaka Kumarbhaccha, was a celebrated yogi and a doctor in the ancient healing tradition of Ayurveda. Of all the famous people Jivaka attended to, the most distinguished was the Buddha. As such, this ancient massage spread to Thailand with the passage of Buddhism across the Asian continent.
Thai yoga massage is a full body technique. It consists of a penetrating massage and gentle yoga movements which are performed on the passive client. The practitioner uses their thumbs, palms, feet and elbows to apply pressure along the body’s sen lines (similar to meridians), in combination with energising stretches. The aim of this is to clear any stagnant energy within the sen lines and so allowing the body to function to its full potential.
In Thailand, this massage technique is seen as a form of preventative medicine rather than an indulgence. It is relaxing and stimulating for the mind as well as the body. Recipients are often able to think more clearly afterwards and have a greater sense of wellbeing. Thai massage can help to: boost energy levels, alleviate tension, improve flexibility, relieve aches and pains, and de-stress.
For a Thai yoga massage treatment, the client must wear loose trousers, top and a pair of clean socks to facilitate stretch work because it is carried out fully clothed. Additionally, it is carried out on a futon mat on the floor.
